We help train medical students from Australian National University in Canberra and occasionally other Universities. Most students visit for six weeks in their third year of a four year graduate entry university course. They greatly appreciate being able to sit in with examinations, practice history taking and examination under supervision and assist in any procedures. Like you doctor, the student will regard all matters discussed in the consultation as confidential.
As most medical courses are now graduate entry students may have other qualifications which can be helpful - for example we have had qualified physiotherapists, dieticians and a dentist as visiting medical students.
Your doctor will ensure the student is always under appropriate supervision. You may prefer not to have a student involved in your consultation and of course this decision will be respected. However please remember that this is very important for the future of medical training and particularly encouraging future rural doctors.
"John Flynn" Students also visit our practice, they are especially interested in rural practice and usually visit for two weeks each year for four years.
2000 - 05 - Christine graduated from Townsville University with honours and is continuing her hospital training, we hope she will be a rural GP.
2004 - 07 - Kathryn a fully qualified dentist visited for 4 years as a John Flynn student. She hopes to combine dentistry and medicine as an orofacial surgeon.
2007 - Scott a physiotherapist prior to changing to medicine, enjoyed rural practice and visited Africa to continue his medical training after his term at PMC.
2008 - Russell designed our PMC logo and assisted with this wesbite - He is planning a career in Gastroenterology - although we may have changed his mind!
